Getting personal

This is a series of activities based on interactions which aim is to share personal information of the students.

1. Speed Dating - In couples - 45': can be extended at the beginning.

Each couple talks about one of the following topics:

morning or evening? City or countryside? Meat or vegetables?

Smart or casual? Summer or spring? Family or friends?

Classical or rock? Cats or dogs? Inside or outside?

Night clubs or restaurants? Work or study? Old things or new things?

2. Choosing topic, telling a story – Small groups

Students choose one topic from a list (see example below) that they can tell a story about. Then they work in pairs and tell stories to each other.

They can work in different groups. They can tell either their own story or one they heard from someone else as if it happened to them. The listeners try to work out if it’s their own story or somebody else’s.


  • Writing can be added to this activity.
  • Focus: Use of the past

Can you remember……?

- when you first started going to school
- getting lost
- a nightmare journey
- an embarrassing moment whilst teaching
- an experience of culture shock
- a moment of pride
- a time of confusionChallenge: lack of spontaneity in low level learners
